Coastliners

Who: JoAnne Harris
When:
summer
Where: on an island
Why: My favorite since Chocolat, all about the shifting sands of time, nature, and family relationships. Really enjoyed it. I had problems with the number of minor characters – hard to keep track of everyone. But a good read, with environmental overtones.

Five Quarters of the Orange

Who: JoAnne Harris
Where: anywhere
When: anytime

Why: After Chocolat, I was hooked on Harris, so I bought everything she’s written   This was my third. She’s a good writer, and I love the French countryside setting. It’s fairly grim overall, though, and not light reading. But her writing skills continue to develop, and the characters stick with you. Ultimately uplifting, thank goodness.
