Coastliners

Who: JoAnne Harris
When:
summer
Where: on an island
Why: My favorite since Chocolat, all about the shifting sands of time, nature, and family relationships. Really enjoyed it. I had problems with the number of minor characters – hard to keep track of everyone. But a good read, with environmental overtones.

The Maytrees

Who: Annie Dillard

Why: You have a relentless desire to read books that make you look up words in the dictionary

A fine book, despite all of the words I’ve never encountered or will likely never see again, and the often befuddling prose. But the characters are likeable – people I could relate to in some degree – plus there’s a moodiness and chill to the Cape Cod setting that I enjoyed.
